I am so glad that you are sharing your experience with us. I just finished in December and I am in the midst of my post grad mental/emotional shift, in which I am now dealing with my fear of being "educated and unemployed", the fastest growing sub-population of millennial's. I think this blog will not educate those looking into going back to higher education, but can also be a forum of camaraderie for those of us experiencing this struggle.

Agreed. Thanks for starting this dialogue in a digital space. As a side note, there are a couple of faculty members who I think have great intention and their courses force us to think about issues surrounding communities of color, in addition to this notion of "urban". There's about three that I've experienced thus far. Beyond the required courses, most of my electives have been valuable, comprehensive and placed in great context (i.e., "Power Strategies and Social Change", "Designing Collaborative Development"...)

My biggest issue in higher education (particularly grad school) is the approach to teaching. I've paid far too many thousands to sit in two hour course that are led by black and white PowerPoints and a human behind a desk clicking a mouse. Quite a few of these courses are based on assumption - assuming we understand the jargon, that we've read some famous book by some well-known author and that we "get it". Um, thats just not true, and beyond that, it wasn't required for it to be true.

As a person from an "urban" environment, I don't see where the issues that I hear about on "block" are addressed. I'm not sure why Milano doesn't have a wider selection of courses surrounding understanding cultures, the power of language and what to means to collaborate with communities versus dictate communities. Wheres the mandatory civic engagement requirement?

One thing is for sure, I didn't plan to pay thousands of dollars to be trained to continue the legacy of oppression, and if it wasn't for Admissions and their amazing job at placing great people around the world in what I call, "a really cool looking IKEA-type of a space" and a hand full of professors, I don't think I would have lasted. So thanks Talib for being one of those brave people.

You should teach a class on courage and consistency.

Definitely bittersweet. I look back and have somehow learned to appreciate the presentations, the personalities, and the policy papers. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Aah, how true.
